With an eclectic and soulful blend of R&B, rock, and funk, Kelley Nicole’s first EP, appropriately titled Introducing…The Kelley Nicole, is as delightfully multi-dimensional as she is. She is a self-proclaimed “old soul” and listening to some of her songs like My Song and I Can’t Stop, will definitely transport you back to a time when R&B ballads were consistently infused with love, soul, and emotion. It’s no wonder then, that when asked who some of her earliest musical inspirations were she says, “definitely Whitney Houston. When I heard that she passed away, it was really heart wrenching for me. My parents always like to tell the story of how I would keep them awake because I would be singing in my bedroom all night. They enjoyed it for a while but then at around 2 a.m. they’d have to come tell me, ‘babe, you have to go to school in the morning’. Whitney Houston was definitely one of the people I’d sing to all night. “
On songs like Life O’ Da Partay, a “funner” Kelley Nicole emerges. On one of her favorite tracks titled Second Round we get to catch a glimpse of her upbeat, spunky side. It’s a song about shaking the dust off and getting back into the “fight” after a fall. It’s an inspirational reminder for women everywhere and one that comes from personal experience. “It’s easy to feel like ‘gosh, it would be so much easier if I just went to a job and just sang on the side’…I’ve had that thought many, many times, but something just keeps kind of coming back to me like ‘No. This is something special.’” And special it is. Kelley makes it no secret that God is her number one priority, even with the unique set of challenges that being a Christian woman in a secular industry can present. “Just from an inspiration perspective, I feel like the Holy Spirit just gives me ideas. And I always pray for the courage and the boldness to give glory to God no matter what I’m doing, whether I’m on a gospel stage or a secular stage.”
Live Beautifully (Take in the Moments) is the EP’s standout feel-good song that encourages people to stop and enjoy life and all of its many blessings. Certainly one of Kelley’s biggest blessings is being married to and working creatively with the love of her life C-Aye Purcell. “I had the opportunity to work with my husband on the EP and he just elevated my sound!” That unique kind of synergy, the kind that can only come from two people in love is laced throughout Introducing…The Kelley Nicole. Even in the midst of creative challenges Kelley Nicole says, “I remind myself in my prayers that God brought us together for a purpose and it’s like iron sharpening iron.” Introducing…The Kelley Nicole is a clear indication of God’s purpose for Kelley Nicole’s musical gifts. One listen to her EP and we’re sure that, like us, you’ll be glad you met her.
