Overcome...

Last night's show Downstairs at the Middle East was AMAZING!! Thanks to everyone that came out to support Soulfège in our last public show of the summer. The audience response was at another level, I'm telling you! I got to sing my usuals - Time and Johnny's Song - but this time it felt different. I promised myself that despite any fears or nervousness or apprehension that I would give my all to the audience and let them see another side of myself - the passionate, the graceful, the God-infused side. It's truly inspiring the work that God can use you for if you let him. I believe that everyone has the capacity to be GREAT, to be God-like, to inspire others, we just have to believe that we receive His blessings everyday, that He continues to want more for us because He does. I'm overcome with a renewed faith and confidence in the future, in the limitless opportunities awaiting all of us. Let's grab them! (I'm listening to India.Arie right now btw, how appropriate... : )

On stage with Common??? : )

This will be my story of the YEAR, you all will not believe this one! So I went to the John Legend/Common/De La Soul concert this week at the Roxy in Boston and it was off the chain! I just had this feeling that something amazing was going to happen that night, if only at the very least I would grab one of the best spots at the club and see a great show. WELL, that happened and MORE!

So I told my girls (shout outs to Michelle, Zakia, and Jess for letting me know about the concert) that I would arrive there early early early to make sure we got a good spot on line. It was general admission and really, nothing was going to keep me from being close to my man John Legend. (Who, by the way, I have so many personal connections to, it's ridiculous! I feel like I'm entitled to meet him for just that reason, but I digress. : ) As promised, got to the spot an hour and half early and was maybe the 10th person on line. I chilled by myself for awhile, listening to my IPod, checking my voicemails, and making some calls. (Big ups to anyone that can truly enjoy their own company, it's a blessing.)

Finally my girls came and then they opened the doors. The ladies wanted to walk around and get some drinks but I was on a mission. I told them, do your thing, but I'm going to stand FRONT and CENTER because, like I said before, nothing was going to keep me from being close to my man John Legend. :) So I grabbed my spot and chatted up the security guard, who was very friendly.

So my girls joined me and we're dancing it up having a good time ('cause you know the live music never starts on time) and I'm looking around taking it all in and generally feeling pretty good about life. I happen to look up to the rafters on the left hand side of the stage and there's this guy pointing in my direction. I turn away because, um, he couldn't possibly be looking at me right?? But I'm curious, and *just* in case he is I take one more glance. He points at me again. So I'm like "me?" He's like "yeah, you, come up here." I was like "now?" :) He's like "yeah!" So I'm like "ok!" I tell the girls I'll be back and I head on over.

So his name is DJ Dummy and he told me he has a special part of the show where he typically gets another woman to help him out. But she bailed on him and he was desperately looking for someone to help him out tonight. He said that he saw me in the crowd, thought I looked beautiful (I'm blushing at this point) and was hoping I might do him the favor. So in my head I'm like "UH HECK YEAH!" But of course, come on now, I'm Kelley Nicole, I've got to play it cool... ;) So I'm like, "what does this entail exactly?" He said, "don't worry, when it comes time I'll let you know exactly what you have to do and it's not hard at all. For now, you can watch the show from here." Yes, and by "here" he meant BACKSTAGE!!! WHAT WHAT?!?! :)

So I watched De La Soul from the side of the stage and they were off the hook. My girls kept looking at me from the front of the stage like "what's going on??!?" I was like "I'm not exactly sure, but whatever!" :) At the end of the set DJ Dummy grabs me up and walks me underneath the stage where he can further explain what I need to do. It turns out that he is Common's DJ and he has a special part of the show where he can show the audience his skillz on the turntables. He usually has a girl come out and blindfold him, then turn and give him a hug, all while he continues to spin. Sounds like fun, and sounds easy....I hope! So then he leaves me on the side and he said, "don't worry, I'll call you up when it's time, but it won't be till the end of the set." Ok, now I'm nervous!

I watched Common do his thing and he was also off the hook. I swear he looked right at me a couple of times. ;) Of course the whole time I'm analyzing my walk to the dj booth, and in my head I'm thinking "do not trip, Kelley Nicole, do not trip!" Finally, DJ Dummy calls me on and I was quite a ham if I do say so myself. :) I blindfolded him while I shhhed the audience. Then I turned around and gave him a big hug and kiss on the cheek while he did his thing. The audience went CRAZY!

WHAT A NIGHT! I went back to the audience at the end of the show and found out that there were MAD peeps that I knew in the crowd. They came up to me like "WHAT THE HECK!?!?! WAS THAT YOU ON STAGE??" :) Haha, yes, I got juice what can I say? Needless to say, the night was not half bad. :) The life of Kelley Nicole just gets better and better...

Kelley Nicole - a member of Soulfège

This was a part of the Soulfège photo shoot two summers ago. It fits perfectly with my golden tone image. I LOVE earth tones!

A Diva is born...

Hello world! Welcome to the heart and mind of Kelley Nicole! : )

I'm so excited to start this new blog of the life and adventures of Kelley Nicole, the diva superstar. Watch out world, she's coming! So I've started voice lessons with probably one of the best music teachers in the world (I'm not biased or anything), Ms. Genithia Dopeness. Haha, ok, that's not her last name but come on now, no last names on the internet. ;) Geni is fantabulous, we're going over gospel, jazz, AND classical, (remembering back to my RCS days, sigh...) and I'm sure we'll throw in a little R&B since I'm the undenaible R&B girl of Soulfège, let's not forget.

Yo, tonight was the hotness! Shout outs to all the musicians at Club Tempo tonight in Waltham, MA. Ron, Lance, Drew, Corey, Marlin, you guys are DOPE and thanks for letting a newbie sit in. : ) And yes, dancing at the end of the evening was...ahem...interesting to say the least. Like I said before, I'm a singer, not a dancer. That poor latin dude, he didn't know what he was getting himself into! Ok, ok, I know, I'm hard on myself, I wasn't *that* bad. :) Drew, you're my boy, thanks for the holla tonight to join ya'll. Keep me updated playa...

I give praise and thanks to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He's the reason why I sing, He's the reason blessings pour from my vocal chords for others to enjoy. I can't explain it, I can just praise God for it.
